1968 Calendar
The year 1968 in the United States is considered by many as one of the most tumultuous and impactful years of the 20th century. Check out these links to get a sense of what happened that year.
It would be interesting to overlay the events of that historic year with what was happening in the Bountiful 9th Ward. We would want to keep our eyes open to the ways that national and international events seeped into the lives of Latter-day Saints in the Bountiful 9th Ward. Can the craziness of that year be detected in what was discussed in sacrament meeting talks or in Sunday School lessons?
Below are the calendars for the 9th Ward found in the newsletters of 1968. One is struck by the structure and continuity represented on these pages. The world may be burning, but we'll still have Relief Society on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m.
What stands out to you on these calendars other than how full pre-Sunday block schedules were? Are there events that you'd like to know more about? How about the "And Should We die" with the 31st ward on January 19? What was that about?
I hope that you might take a minute and check out the sites above to identify historic events and see what was happening in the ward on those days. For example, on January 14, the Green Bay Packers won the second Super Bowl. When families got together to attend sacrament meeting that evening at 6:30 to listen to the Bountiful High Seminary Choir and Program, did they talk about the game? On Thursday, April 4, the day Martin Luther King was shot and killed, the youth had MIA. Riots erupted in major cities across the United States. How did this register in Bountiful that evening?
Perhaps we can try to answer some of those questions from sources available to us. If any of you kept journals or have personal records from 1968 that answer some of those questions, we'd love to have you share excerpts.
